What to say if investigators want to question you

“I invoke my right to remain silent. I want an attorney. I do not consent to any searches or seizures.”

After invoking, remain silent. Do not explain, argue, identify evidence, provide passwords or passcodes, unlock devices, or help investigators interpret messages, photos, documents, or other evidence without legal advice.

Why silence matters

Statements made during an investigation can become the foundation for a GOMOR, Article 15/NJP, separation, elimination, or court-martial. Even a person who believes they are innocent can make statements that are misunderstood, taken out of context, or used to develop additional evidence.
